Book De******ion:
While medical and hygienic developments have driven down the mortality rates of infectious diseases, pathogenic microorganisms are still a major factor in everyday clinical practice. They are still the most frequent cause of death in Third World countries. New and incurable infectious diseases are a worldwide problem. It is inescapable, therefore, that modern medicine must redouble its efforts to understand the relationship between microorganisms and humans and continue to lead the search for new therapies. The following five subject areas are covered: Immunology Bacteriology Mycology Virology Parasitology

Book De******ion:
The Pathogenic Enteric Protozoa: Giardia, Entamoeba, Cryptosporidium and Cyclospora compromise the health of millions of people, largely from developing nations. These protozoan parasitic agents contribute significantly to the staggering caseload of diarrheal disease morbidity encountered in developing world nations. Compounding the issue of their mere presence is the fact that standard ova and parasite exams frequently do not detect these infections. Detectable stages may be shed intermittently or require specialized staining procedures. Added to this is the often large number of asymptomatic carriers who serve as reservoirs for infecting others. These parasites are also not strangers to more developed nations, having responsibility for both small and large-scale disease outbreaks. In such settings they may be even more difficult to detect simply because they are frequently overlooked in the grand scheme of disease causing possibilities. They share common features: all are Protozoa, all possess trophic stages that inhabit the gastrointestinal tract, all have the ability to produce disease and in some instances death, and all produce environmentally stable cysts or oocysts, which ensure their transmissibility

The present publication brings together and updates the various guidelines produced by WHO over the years on sampling of specimens for laboratory investigation, identification of bacteria, and testing of antimicrobial resistance. It concentrates on the procedures to be followed, rather than the basic techniques of microscopy and staining, which have been described in detail in other WHO publications

The fourth edition of this highly popular book has been extensively revised. The first chapter, a revision of the immune system, has been updated to provide the ‘nitty-gritty’ a student or trainee needs to know in order to understand diseases that have an immunological basis. The rest of the book’s focus is clinical but covers the underlying pathophysiology of disease so that the reader is left with a lasting grasp of the basis of symptoms, signs, special investigations and management of the patient. It will be of great value to medical students and postgraduate trainees who require a thorough knowledge of the rapidly expanding number of diseases that have an immunological basis.Other features of the book include:- Selected case-histories that cover key learning points- Questions (multiple choice) and answers to help test understanding- Updates on immune diseases, immunotherapy and transplantation- New sections on chemokines and their role in inflamation, viral infections and much, much more- A dedicated ***site that provides updates, further case-histories and references together with short commentary on evidence for new or controversial statements in the text. Medical Microbiology and Infection at a Glance is a concise and accessible guide to the field of microbiology and infection. Updated throughout, the second edition takes the reader through the underlying concepts of microbiology to the pathogenesis, transmission and clinical management of infection and disease. Following the now classic ‘At a Glance’ format, topics are discussed on double page spreads. On one page, helpful memorable diagrams illustrate vital points and on the accompanying page, the text presents key facts and fundamental information.Starting with structure and classification, section one covers the transmission, investigations, therapy and control of infections. Section two and three cover the vital details of bacteriology and virology respectively. The final three sections include essential coverage of mycology, parasitology and systemic infection. The second edition includes three new chapters, which cover the use of antibiotics and treatment guidelines; vaccination and emerging infections as well as a new chapter increasing the coverage of Enteric Gram-negative bacteria. The second edition of Medical Microbiology and Infection at a Glance is an ideal resource for medical and biomedical science students, whilst students of other health professions and those in areas such as infection control will also find it invaluable. This book fits into the budget and reading time of busy students, and is recommended as primary or supplementary reading for a lecture-****d course, and/or as a book for revision prior to examinations.

Book De******ion:
Since the publication of the first edition of the Handbook of Human Immunology in 1997, major scientific achievements have elucidated our understanding of the complexities of the human immune system. This second edition compiles the major breakthroughs of the past decade including dramatic increases in the number of recognized clusters of differentiation on the surface of leukocytes and associated cells, establishment of an entire new chemokine and chemokine receptor nomenclature system, and discovery of more than 30 lymphokines. The text emphasizes clinically relevant immunological parameters, and clarifies the basic principles underlying immune system assays, as well as applications and interpretations of immune tests.

Book De******ion:
A comprehensive account of protozoan and metozoan diseases in modern clinical practice, with orientation towards clinical management of parasitic infections. In the past, parasitology was considered as an obscure subject of little relevance to the majority of clinicians and microbiologists. Over the last decade, however, much has happened to change this, not least the explosion in foreign travel
This textbook is the forth in the Principles and Practice series, providing an expansive and detailed coverage of clinical microbiology. It has a similar appeal to that of Zuckerman’s, Principles & Practice of Clinical Virology, with an international authorship and emphasis placed on integrating new knowledge in a clinically relevant manner.
. An essential, up-to-date sourcebook on the fundamentals of human parasitology
. Provides a global approach with renowned and international authorship
. Completes the quartet of Principles and Practice series in Microbiology
